RANGOLI – (100% Pure Veg Restaurant) Calangute Goa

This unassuming restaurant, may be down to earth, but one thing for sure; they serve up a kiss ass curry. And No GST or extra taxes!
When we arrived there was only a couple of tables left, with diners just finishing their meals. Which was a good sign, that the food was good. The restaurant was clean and tidy. Staff were polite. One waiter spoke limited English, but was friendly. Knowing he was perhaps a little limited in his English, he passed us over to another waiter, who was very genteel. Ordering our meals he asked how spicy we would like our curries. Read our order back. During the meal he did a table check. After the meal he asked if we would like coffee, tea or desserts. But to be honest with you, we were so full after our meal, I don’t think I could have even managed a coffee. (So unlike me!)

If the standard of food we got that day, was standard then I can see why it was full when we arrived. Two bowls full to the brim, not only packed full of flavour, but jam-packed with all the elements described on the menu. And the gravy sauces! Well what can I say? Full of flavour, thick and velvety.

A must place to visit for a hearty lunch.

VEG JAIPUR RUPEES 190/£2.09/€2.38/₽165.24/₴79.29/$2.93

Hand on heart this is the best Veg Jaipur I have tasted in a long while. Under that poppadum the bowl was packed solid with chunky vegetables. Then the added surprise at the bottom, another poppadum. The flavour was awesome too.

Mattar Paneer Rupees 190/£2.09/€2.38/₽165.24/₴79.29/$2.93

I loved this curry, I cook it at home and try not to order all the time when eating out. But, I am so glad I did. So often when I order it, I am always a tad disappointed that I get more sauce than paneer. Fear not, there was a bowl full of paneer and delicious fresh peas, in a rich velvety sauce that was yummy.

Om Sai Ratna Family Restaurant (100% Veg.)- Calangute A great cheap place for lunch.

Yes, it is a basic, typical -what I like to call a canteen.

However, if you are looking for a good, cheap place to eat, with great curries and value for money, Om Sai Ratna is a good place to go. What I really liked was the curries we not tourist spiced. But don’t let this put you off, the waiter did ask how spicy we wanted them. We asked for traditional Indian spiced, and it was very good.

Review CK Restro Lounge Candolim Goa

Only opening in November of last year, CK Restro Lounge, is the sister restaurant to Angaara on beach road, Candolim.  In my opinion the better of the two. Perfectly situated, on Casablanca Road, a stone’s throw away from the beach, and the hustle and bustle of Candolim High Street.

The rooftop restaurant of this contemporary restro lounge is the perfect setting for a great night out with friends or a romantic dinner for two.
The menu looked attractive, offering some out of the box mains, the usual Indian, Goan, Chinese and seafood.  For the health conscious there is a wholefood selection, of calorie calculated dishes.
The minute I entered CK I knew that I liked this place. The ambience, the background music and the friendly staff had me right there. Not to mention no extra taxes and GST.

STAFF

MR and I were received with smiles and a gracious welcome by two waiters.  Praveen asked where we would like to sit, and then proceeded to serve us for the rest of the evening.

All waiters were well-presented, attentive and polite, and never short of conversation.

SERVICE

No sooner had we sat, we were given a menu and a drinks order was taken. Drinks were served quickly and efficiently.

On looking at the menu there were so many nice things, MR R and I were spoilt for choice.

Finally, when ready to order food, Praveen was there promptly.

Having repeated our order, asked if we would like more drinks.

There was an interval when the power went off for 10 minutes, but the generator kicked right in. However, this did not hinder the arrival of food, arriving 25 minutes after ordering, then asking if we would like more drinks.

Table check on food, and once more asking if we needed drinks.

HYGIENE

The restaurant and bar area, spotless, neat and tidy.

Toilets were clean, with toilet paper, soap and paper hand towels. I had a quick look in the men’s, they were of the same standard. However, compared to the rest of the establishment I expected them to be much better.

FOOD

HERBED PANCAKE STACK: Filled with a compote of fresh vegetables, with green pea velouté and minced beef. Served with roasted tomatoes and sauté veg.
Rupees 320/£3.54/€4.00/₽279.75/$4.96/₴133.92
The first thing that intrigued about this dish, was the pea velouté, (how it should be spelt) would be served. When my meal arrived I could not help but notice that my stack was not a stack. It was more of a pancake parcel. It had been the phrasing of stack that pulled me to choosing this dish. I pictured, a pancake, topped with the beef, then the compote of vegetables. Then repeating this so there were three or four pancakes. However, the pancake itself was akin to a cooked, fresh lasagne sheet. It did have herbs and was tasty. The tomatoes were not roasted. In my opinion they could have left off the mega veg and put a nice crisp green salad with a jug of vinaigrette
There was no a compote of fresh vegetables. Basically for those that don’t know, a compote is, it means to cook gently—to stew—until ingredients start to collapse and become almost purée-like. On the other hand the beef itself was seasoned well, that makes me think they used a vegetable stock. As for the pea Velouté, well this was just coarsely mashed peas. A velouté is the French term for soup, or a velouté sauce that is thicken with egg or cream, of which it was neither.
However, what I did get though, was a very tasty meal. The pancake, beef and crushed pea all worked very well together. What I would like to say to the chef and management at CK and any other restaurant out there is- When you put fancy expressions and techniques on your menu, make sure that is what you deliver.

Mr R had to try it. HALF TANDOORI CHICKEN. Rupees 250/£2.77/€3.12/₽218.66/$3.88/₴104.62
Trying a piece myself, I have to say this is the best tandoori chicken I have tasted in a long time. It was so fresh, falling off the bone and a great portion size. Well done!

WOULD I GO AGAIN? Certainly, I really want to try more of this menu. This restaurant is now on my list of return to.  Yes, a few issues with my food but at the end of the day everything else about this place was perfect.  I would happily return and take friends with me.
