Review of Raju’s Happy Shed – Candolim Goa

I am actually appreciative to my friends, Sonia and Steve who suggested I should check this place out for a review.  Not only is this a review, but a wonderful story of how through hard work and being proficient in your talent, dreams can come true.

No sooner had MR R and I sat down at the table, we were greeted by the friendly face of Raju a waiter, we both respected and liked from a well-known restaurant in Candolim. Having been innovation mangers ourselves of restaurants, bars and hotels, Raju was the best waiter we had seen in long while. It wasn’t just a job for him. You could see he had a genuine hunger for hospitality. On many occasions, he had confided in us his dream of owning his own restaurant. Therefore, neither of us were shocked when he told us he was the owner. We are both in total admiration for this guy. He learnt the trade and then put his well-earned money where his heart is and opened this wonderful restaurant.

Staff & Service
Having employed young men from his hometown in North India, Raju has reproduced mini images of himself. Although early days and they still have a lot to learn ever waiter was well-presented, attentive and polite. Raju himself worked the floor with his usual professionalism and charm. Attending to all his guests, all the while in control of what was happening.  As the restaurant gradually filled the staff naturally stayed on track without weakening. Waiting staff, eagerly geared up a notch. What really impressed me, was from where I sat, I could see Raju had a chef whose job was purely to work on the pass. Basically, this is a person who coordinates the food service. As orders come in that person tells the other chefs what they need. Keeps track of how long the order is taking and checks the order before he calls waiting staff to serve. Amazing!
Poppadum’s and pickles served as soon as seated.
Drinks order taken and delivered quickly and efficiently.
When ready to order food, we were asked how hot we would like our curries, as with European guests curries are normally toned down. Asking for traditional med spicy our waiter said if it was too hot, then we could ask for yoghurt. Our order was then repeated back to us and asked if we wanted more drinks.
In less than twenty minutes our food was served.
Table check on food, and once more asking if we needed drinks.

HYGIENE
The restaurant and bar area, spotless, neat and tidy. When you hear the word shed, one would assume a temporary beach shack kitchen. Fear not, Raju has a fully functioning, hygienic, brick built catering kitchen. All chefs, professionally suited and booted.
Toilets were well maintained, clean and fresh smelling, with toilet paper, soap and paper hand towels.

WOULD I GO AGAIN?
Certainly I really want to try more of this menu.
When we arrived there were only a couple of tables occupied, but even so there still was a pleasant atmosphere. As the evening progressed with more customers eating and chatting, adding the easy-going background music, MR R and I both agreed Raju has the makings of an excellent restaurant.
Yes, you can go out onto the main street and be put under the illusion that Goa is all fancy restaurants and boom, boom, boom, and you would be right. That is how Goa is now advancing. Don’t get me wrong, MR R and I are all for some boom, boom, boom, once in a while. But what enticed us back many years ago, year after year and then to live here - was good old fashioned hospitality, great food, value for money, great service and a relaxed ambiance. Put all of these components together and this is what Raju, with all his hard years of working in Goa has achieved, what a holiday maker’s vision of a vacation in Goa is all about.
This restaurant is now on my list of return to. Look out for more reviews!
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Raju’s Happy Shed has a great value for money menu of Indian and continental, to tickle your taste buds.

Revisit Review- Monica’s Bar & Restaurant Candolim Goa.

Manning the kitchen at Monica’s Bar & Restaurant, almost singlehandedly every night, is the lovely owner Menetta. As you sit on her simple, yet quaint roof terrace restaurant, your taste buds can’t help salivate, smelling the aroma of delicious food. How can I explain it? Well… to me it is like walking into my mother’s or mother-in-law’s house for Sunday dinner. That first whiff of a roast. The alluring smell of roast potatoes and Yorkshire’s. But most of all, that heart-warming feeling, knowing it has been prepared and cooked with love.

I will let you into a secret. When you eat at Monica’s that is precisely what you get. Delicious, home cooked food, made with love. Yes it may take a little while longer to be served, nevertheless it is well worth those five extra minutes, when everything is homemade.  From her fish batter, mushy peas, chips to steaks, curries and fish dishes. There has been nothing that I have eaten at Monica’s that has not been far short of exceptional.

What I also love about this place, is that the menu is not extensive. Menetta has been smart, offering enough choice for every pallet, but enough to be able to cook all the items to her renowned, high standard.

I will not lie, this is a not a whistle and bells restaurant. No witty waiters, or live entertainment. But what I will say is… Monica’s Bar and Restaurant is a must if you are looking for first-class European food and the real deal, Goan cuisine.

A Must Try

Monica’s special of fish and chips. Served with homemade mushy peas and chips. Three kingfish fillets, coated in a textbook fish shop batter. Thrice cooked chips and scrumptious mushy peas. Rupees 350/£4.00/€4.51/₽311.68/₴157.04/$5.50
Also try:
Succulent Steak topped with a fried egg, served with veg, mashed potatoes or chips, fried mushrooms and onions in a pepper sauce. Rupees 500/£5.73/€6.44/₽445.26/₴234.36/$7.86

Grilled tuna fish steak, chips and salad. Rupees 260/£2.98/€3.35 ₽231.53/₴111.67/$4.09

RED SNAPPER CHIPS AND SALAD RUPEES 550/£6.30/€7.09/₽489.78/₴246.79/$8.65

BEEF CHILLY WITH RICE OR CHAPATTI’S RUPEES 400/£4.58/€5.15/₽356.20/ ₴179.48/$6.29

5/5 Monica’s is in my top frequented places to eat.

Review Namaste Bar & Restaurant Candolim Goa

Sometimes it pays to take a walk down a side road once in a while. You may be surprised by what you find.
Ideally named, Namaste, the Hindu meaning - "I bow to the divine in you."  Has the air of a secret place, filled with serenity. This  small garden setting, is nestled on a peaceful lane from the hustle and activity of Candolim High street.

STAFF

MR and I were received with smiles and a gracious welcome by the two waiters, Shankar and Hemant that then proceeded to serve us for the rest of the evening.

Both young men were well-presented, attentive and polite. As well as both being professional. The evening was even more enjoyable with their chit-chat and humour.  It wasn’t just our table, I noticed them both give the same undivided attention, banter and wit to all the guests that night.

SERVICE

No sooner had we sat, we were given a menu and a drinks order was taken. Drinks were served quickly and efficiently.

On looking at the menu there were so many nice things, MR R and I were spoilt for choice. When Shankar came to take our order, we had so many questions to ask. “What does this come with?”  - “How many pork chops?” – “What fish is used?” To name but a few. I felt dreadful asking so many questions. Nevertheless, Shankar’s splendid knowledge of the menu answered all of our questions without a bat of an eye.

Finally, when ready to order food Shankar was there promptly, to take our order. Having repeated our order, but also included what the dish would come with, he informed us our order would take 30 minutes, asking if we would like more drinks.

Food arrived 30 minutes after ordering, asking if we would like more drinks.

Table check on food, and once more asking if we needed drinks.

HYGIENE

The restaurant and bar area, spotless, neat and tidy. So too was the tandoori area, with a well presented chef in whites and a hat. I had a quick glance into the kitchen that looked hygienic, seeing all the staff in whites and hairnets or hats.

Toilets were well maintained, clean and fresh smelling, with toilet paper and soap, although no paper hand towels. I even had a quick look in the mens!! They were of the same standard.
