Lemons do grow in India, though you will struggle to
find the large, bumpy, bright yellow Eureka varieties commonly found in Europe
and the US.
The lemons you mostly find in Goa could easily be confuse for a lime, based on its
round appearance.
Although
small they are juicy, medium acidity with
few to no seeds. In Goa, limes are widely sold in the markets, street corners
and on the roadside. Due to it being
harder to find a lemon, it is common to interchange lemon and lime, ask for a
lemon, and more than likely you will be given a lime. Both lemon and lime go
under the same name of nimbu.
So what is
the difference between a lemon and a lime? Lemon zest is entirely different
from the tart, thin skins of the limes.
However,
the other day while shopping in Calangute market I found a proper lemon. Not
common to Goa I was fortune that the stallholder had a lemon tree in his
garden. Although a little more expensive
at 20 Rupees/ 0.02p / 0.003 Euro / 0.03 Cents / 0.20 Ruble
compared to 0.05
Rupees /0.01p / 0.01 Euro/ 0.01 Cents /
0.05 Ruble for 1 lemon/lime
they were well worth
the money.
As you can
see, there is a significant in size. One small Indian lemon will give you just
under 1 Tablespoon of juice.
